A daughter was killed and her mother injured after an 89-year-old man lost control while driving and crashed into them in a parking lot on the Northwest Side of Chicago Wednesday afternoon.
Delores Sobczak, 76, had gone out on a lunch date after a dentist appointment with her mother, 96, at an Irving Park restaurant in the 2900 block of West Addison.
According to the Chicago Police, the women were getting into a vehicle around 12:30 p.m. when a man in a Chevrolet Tahoe SUV crashed into them. Officials said he had actually crashed into multiple cars before striking them.
The Cook County Examiner’s Office said the daughter was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:59 p.m.
Officials said the mother, 97-year-old Johanna Kazak, was also taken to Masonic, however, her condition was stabilized.
“It’s shocking,” expressed Joyce, the victim’s granddaughter. “We want more answers… just the understanding of what happened with the other driver at that time. I know he was elderly as well. I guess I would like to know the process of his license status, did he have insurance?”
The accident left Kazak bruised and disoriented but her family says she is now recovering.

The family said the ironic part is that Sobczak was the one who always took care of her mother, especially now as a retired nurse.
“To see the way that she left us is very hard,” expressed Joyce. “That’s the hardest part.”
Authorities said the death was ruled an accident and the driver was issued a citation for negligent driving.
