Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Chicago Area

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for most of the Chicago area Monday as snow moves into the region once again.

The advisory was scheduled to go into effect at 3 p.m. in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, DeKalb, McHenry and Kane counties, according to the National Weather Service.

Cook, DuPage and Lake counties in Illinois were also under a Winter Weather Advisory, beginning at 6 p.m. Both advisories were scheduled to expire at midnight.

Monday begins windy and cold before clouds thicken and increase in the morning. An overcast afternoon sees rain developing late, mixed with sleet in the far western areas, becoming snow as it moves east through the evening.

The NWS warned that the snow may be heavy at times early Monday evening, falling at a rate of up to an inch per hour. Snowfall accumulation of 2 to 3 inches was expected in the suburbs, higher in the northern parts of the region. The metro area will see wet snow, the NWS said, making for slippery road conditions, potentially in time to impact the evening commute.

The snow was expected to taper off from south to north around midnight or 1 a.m., leaving little to no accumulation south of I-80, but gradually increasing to an inch or two north of I-80 and 2 or 3 inches far north - with some areas close to the state line seeing as much as 4 inches of snowfall accumulation possible.
