Where to Recycle Christmas Trees in Chicago

The holidays are over and it's time to turn attention to clean up.

Chicago residents have some options when it comes to getting rid of that dry, brittle Christmas tree. The city offers free recycling at 23 locations around the city, where crews will ground the tree, wreat or string of garland into mulch.

The program begins on Saturday, January 3 and ends on Saturday January 17.  A few locations will offer free mulch -- made from the trees -- to interested residents.

“The City’s Christmas tree recycling program is an easy and environmentally-friendly alternative for residents to dispose of their trees,” Emanuel said in the statement.

“Each year through the Christmas tree recycling program, we are able to divert thousands of Christmas trees away from landfills for re-use in our community,” Emanuel said.

The city said more than 10,000 trees were mulched in 2014.
