Wheaton, Palatine Among Safest Cities in U.S., Ranking Says

Illinois gets a bad rap sometimes, but the state got some great news as it is home to 10 of the safest cities in the United States, according to a new ranking.

That ranking, compiled by the National Council for Home Safety and Security, features numerous Chicago suburbs, with Wheaton ranking as the sixth-safest city in the United States.

The ranking cites Wheaton College and the Cosley Zoo as two of the biggest attractions in the city, and also cites the high number of churches in the community.

Four more Illinois cities are in the top 20 in the ranking, with Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, and Palataine ranking 15th through 17th, respectively. Mount Prospect rounds out the top 20.

Des Plaines (35), Naperville (41), Tinley Park (46), Oak Lawn (79), and Bolingbrook (86) all appeared on the extensive list.

The rankings were compiled using data on crime rates and violent crime rates, according to the council’s website.

Thornton, CO was ranked as the safest town in America, followed by Greenwich, CT. Weston, FL, Johns Creek, GA, and Sammamish, WA rounded out the top five.

California had 20 cities on the list, giving it the highest number of entries on the list. Illinois was tied for the third-most cities, joining Michigan with 10 entries.
