Two Children Injured in West Side Fire

Five ambulances were initially called because it was believed others may have been trapped in the home

Two children were in critical condition Thursday night after a fire in their home on Chicago's west side.

Firefighters were called at about 9 p.m. to a two-story home on the 4600 block of West Erie Street, fire department spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.

Everyone inside the home was able to get out by the time fire crews arrived, but two children were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, Roccasalva said.

Officials said they believe the children, about 9 years old, suffered smoke inhalation.

Five ambulances were initially called because it was believed others may have been trapped in the home.

No other injuries were reported, Roccasalva said.

The fire was contained to the back of the home, he said. The cause remains under investigation.
