Police: Man Dead After Ingesting Unknown White Substance While Fleeing Officers

A man is dead after Waukegan police say he ingested drugs while fleeing officers on foot.

Police say that they arrived at a residence in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at approximately 3 p.m. to serve a search warrant for narcotics. While detectives were on scene, they observed a man, who had an active arrest warrant, drive up to the residence they were targeting.

The man walked up to the home, and as officers approached to confront him, he fled the scene on foot.

While he was running, police say that the man ingested an unknown white substance. Detectives say the man then fell while running and was placed into custody, but refused to spit out the unknown white substance.

The man then became “physically distressed,” according to police, and was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Lake County Coroner is preparing to perform an autopsy on Wednesday, and police are continuing to investigate what they are terming an “in-custody death.”
