“Group of Thugs” Arrested in Fatal Waukegan Carjacking

Police Chief Dan Greathouse called the incident a "crime of opportunity"

UPDATE: Charges filed

Three people are in police custody following a Thursday morning carjacking in Waukegan that left one man dead.

One person was arrested without incident during the midday hour.

Two others were arrested following a search at Lakeside Towers, a low-income high-rise at Julian and Genesee streets, just north of the Waukegan Post Office.

One was found hiding in an apartment behind a mirror. The other was hiding in a vent and got stuck, police said. He was removed and taken out of the apartment building on a stretcher.

None of them have been publicly named because they haven't been formally charged.

Police Chief Dan Greathouse called the incident a "crime of opportunity" and described the three men as a "group of thugs."

Police began searching the complex after a police dog followed a scent from Julian Street and North Avenue, where the body of Carlos Hernandez was found, said Sgt. David DeBaufer.

DeBaufer said a weapon has been found.

"We’re not sure it’s the one," Debaufer said. "We’re looking for more."

Hernandez, 44, was found with gunshot wounds to the chest just two blocks away from his home. Hernandez leaves behind a wife, Josefa, and a 16-year-old daughter named Leslie.

The car, a Cadillac STS, was found abandoned nearby at Julian and County streets.
