Warm Weekend, Bitter New Year's Ahead

Friday's temperatures will continue to climb, reaching into the mid-30s and near 40 degrees by Saturday

Chicago area temperatures are about to go up, up, up and then down, down, down.

Just after a burst of snow made for a "White Christmas" Wednesday, a weekend warm-up will bring temperatures near 40 degrees.

Thursday’s temperatures stayed in the low-20s with flurries in portions of the area. Friday's temperatures will continue to climb, reaching into the mid-30s and near 40 degrees by Saturday.

But don’t be fooled by the warmer weekend temps, the Chicago area is set for a nastily cold New Year’s.

The chance for snow returns Sunday as temps dip into the upper-20s and an arctic blast returns to the city at the start of next week, sending mercury levels plummeting to 11 degrees Monday.

The cold temps are expected to stay in the area for much of next week, with highs staying the mid-teens through the holiday.
