Walgreens Opens Upscale Store in the Loop

The company will open a new flagship on State Street this week

Deerfield-based Walgreens is opening a new upscale store in Chicago's Loop.

The 27,000-square-foot store at State and Randolph streets will open to the public Tuesday, according to Crain's Chicago Business.

The store features high-end amenities such as $15 manicure stations, a barista, made-to-order sushi and a juice bar.

The move is an attempt to attract upscale shoppers and boost sales beyond the pharmacy counter.

Walgreen executives confirmed to Crain's the company is looking at former Borders locations across the country for flagship opportunities but hasn't said whether the State Street space is being eyed.

Gov. Pat Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emanuel are expected to speak at the Loop store's grand opening at 5 p.m. Monday.
