Walgreens Announces New Chicago Office, Nearly 2,000 New Jobs

The company won't relocate the 3,200 employees that currently work in Deerfield

Walgreens will be opening a new office in Chicago, and with the new space comes nearly 2,000 new jobs, the company announced Friday.

According to a press release, Walgreens will open a new office in the Old Post Office Building, located in the 400 block of West Van Buren. When the new office opens, the company plans on bringing 1,800 jobs to the new facility.

Approximately 1,300 of those jobs will be relocated from other areas, according to the company.

The new office will be announced at an event Monday afternoon, with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel expected to attend.

“Investing in our infrastructure and building our digital and technical capabilities are essential elements of our business transformation strategy, as we work to improve access for our customers and enhance the customer experience,” Walgreens President Alex Gourlay said in a statement. “The space in the iconic Old Post Office building allows us to attract and retain the best talent from all of Chicagoland.”

The new office is scheduled to open in the fall of 2019. The company’s Technology Center will also relocate to the Old Post Office.

“Walgreens was born in Chicago with one small pharmacy on the South Side, and their big new presence in one of our city’s most iconic locations is a great way to look to the future,” Emanuel said in a statement.

According to the company, the 3,200 employees of the Walgreens Boots Alliance will remain headquartered in suburban Deerfield.
