The Volo Auto Museum plans to auction off a rare police car this month to benefit the family of slain Fox Lake police officer Lt. Joe Gliniewicz.
The 2002 Camaro B4C will be up for auction from Sept. 11 through Sept. 18, and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Gliniewicz family.
Lt. Gliniewicz, 52, was on the brink of retirement following a 30-year career in law enforcement when he was gunned down in the line of duty on Sept. 1. Thousands turned out to mourn him at a public visitation and funeral service Monday.
Brian Grams, the director of the Volo Auto Museum, said he and his family, including his 7- and 10-year-old daughters, Breanna and Bridgette, knew Lt. Gliniewicz well.
"Both of my girls knew him as 'Joe Joe,'" Grams said. "They both looked up to him. We have snapshots of Joe carrying Breanna around on his shoulders ... the girls just have a lot of positive memories about him."
The police car will be "dressed up" as a tribute to Lt. Gliniewicz, Grams said. Road Rage Designs will donate the graphics for the car.
Only 13 police cars of the same kind have been built, and the cars were originally only available to law enforcement, Grams said.
"It is without a doubt an investment and highly collectible," Grams said.
During the week-long auction, anyone interested can view the car in the courtyard outside the museum entryway at 27582 Volo Village Road in Volo, Ill.

The police car will also be on display on Wednesday at the McHenry Outdoor Theater while the theater hosts a benefit event for the Gliniewicz family. The theater will show "Superman," and admission costs whatever the attendees choose to donate to the Gliniewicz family.
After the auction, the car will also be displayed in the Round Lake Heights 22nd Annual Festival parade at 11 a.m. on Sept. 12.
