US Congressmen to Tour Chicago, Launch Anti-Violence Campaign

The group is launching a federal initiative to reduce gun violence and stimulate economic opportunity

A group of congressmen, led by Illinois Rep. Robin Kelly, will visit Chicago Friday to launch the Urban Progress Initiative, a federal initiative aimed at reducing gun violence and stimulating economic opportunity.

The group consists of 14 congressmen, including a large contingency from Illinois. Rep. Danny Davis, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. Cheri Bustos and Rep. Tammy Duckworth will all be on hand.

The group will tour “three community-based organizations that have successfully implemented progressive programs and strategies to reduce violence in their areas.”

These include the South Side YMCA, Kids Off the Block and Inner City Muslim Action Network (IMAN).

Chicago has seen a spike in gun violence at the start of 2016. As of 4/19, 153 people have been shot and killed and nearly 1,000 have been shot, according to HeyJackass.
