The University of Illinois has stopped new partnerships with a Chinese firm that the U.S. government considers a national security threat.
The Champaign News-Gazette reports that the policy involving the tech firm Huawei was announced last week in an email to the College of Engineering.
It prohibits accepting "new grants, contracts or gifts from Huawei" or any affiliate. Engineering spokesman Bill Bell says 11 current Huawei-sponsored projects may continue to completion.
Federal law restricts use of Huawei's equipment because U.S. officials claim it could be used to spy on American companies or government agencies. There has been no public evidence that this has occurred. Huawei has denied the claim.
A phone call seeking comment from the Huawei office at the UI Research Park was not immediately returned last week.
