2 Shot by Off-Duty Chicago Police Officer

Police say the off-duty officer was approached by a man early Wednesday on the West Side

An off-duty Chicago police officer shot a man and a woman early Wednesday morning on the city's West Side.

The off-duty detective was driving near the 3100 block of West 15th Place at about 1:05 a.m. when he noticed several people causing a disturbance, according to Police News Affairs.

Police said the officer rolled down his window to investigate and saw a man approach him with a handgun.

"The officer announces, 'Police, drop the gun,' but the offender continues to advance on him," said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden. "At that point the officer fires in fear of his life."

One of the victim's family members told NBCChicago his cousin had a cell phone, not a gun.

Police said further investigation revealed a woman also sustained a gunshot wound.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he remains in good condition this morning, but the condition of the woman is unknown.
