Two Semis Involved in Fiery Crash on I-80 in NW Indiana

Two semis were involved in a fiery crash on Interstate 80 in Northwest Indiana that temporarily closed part of the interstate early Saturday morning.

The driver of one of the semi trucks, Kevin Greenlaw, of Bolingbrook, was driving westbound on Interstate 80 at about 12 a.m. near Kennedy Avenue in Hammond when he turned on his emergency flashers and pulled over to the shoulder near the right lane because his trailer had been disabled. As Greenlaw entered the right lane again after his trailer was repaired, another semi, driven by Zivojin Lukic, of Elk Grove, hit the rear of his truck and jackknifed across all westbound lanes before coming to a rest in the far left lane, according to Indiana State Police.

The crash caused one of the semi's diesel fuel tanks to rupture and spew fuel across 300 feet of the roadway. A fire broke out following the spill, but it went out by itself shortly after.

Greenlaw was taken to Munster Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and Lukic was not injured in the crash, police said.

Lukic was cited for driving too fast to avoid a collision.

All lanes were closed during the investigation of the crash, but they were reopened by 4 a.m.
