Two Dead, One Injured in West Side Shooting

The victims were inside a car when someone from the sidewalk fired shots at them, police said

Two people have died, including a 32-year-old father, and a woman was injured in a shooting early Sunday morning in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The three victims were inside a dark-colored vehicle at about 2:35 a.m. traveling southbound in the 500 block of North Avers Avenue when shots were fired at them from the sidewalk, police said. A fourth person was inside the car with the victims, but only three people were struck by the gunfire.

One of the victims who died was identified by his father as 32-year-old Daren Thomas Jr. His father told NBC Chicago that Thomas had a twin brother and a 13-year-old son. Thomas last saw his own father at 10 p.m. Saturday when his father told him he loved him and to stay safe, he said.

Police said Thomas was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The second victim who died in the shooting was only identified as an adult man. Police said the man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A 26-year-old woman was also struck by the gunfire and suffered a graze wound to her right ankle, according to police. She was transported to Norwegian American Hospital in stable condition.

It is not clear how many shots were fired and from how many offenders. No one is in custody for the shooting.

Area North detectives are investigating.
