Lucky Ducks: Total of 18 Ducklings Saved by 2 Different Fire Departments in One Day

The family of ducks were released back into the wild after the brief but feather-ruffling experience

These are some lucky ducks.

A totaly of 18 (yes, 18!) ducklings were rescued Thursday in two different incidents by two separate Chicago-area fire departments.

First up: firefighters plucked 12 ducklings from a Glendale Heights storm drain and video of the whole ordeal was shared on social media. Twitter user Loriann Jean told NBC 5 she noticed a distressed mother duck in the 500 block of North Avenue in Glendale Heights.

“We saw this mommy duck circling the sewer, and we heard little chicks inside,” she said.

The rescuers were able to reunite the mother duck with her dozen chirping babies. They told Loriann Jean they hadn’t seen so many baby ducks in a storm drain in nearly 25 years of service, she said.

“Thank you to the Glendale Heights firefighters,” she added.

But that's not all!

Another six ducklings were rescued by Lake Zurich firefighters firefighters from a sewer near a grocery story and reunited them with their momma duck.

What a day.
