Tennessee Truck Driver Charged in I-55 Crash

A semi driver from Tennessee faces a felony charge of driving while fatigued following a 12-vehicle crash on Interstate 55 in suburban Chicago.

Illinois State Police officials say 52-year-old Mark Tipton of Crossville, Tennessee, will appear in bond court Sunday

Five people were taken to hospitals after the pre-dawn crash Friday. Another nine people were treated at the scene. None of the injuries was considered life-threatening.

Investigators say Tipton failed to stop, causing a pileup collision on a section of roadway where two northbound lanes were closed for construction. The ISP says Tipton reported he fell asleep just before the crash and he did not attempt to stop.

Authorities say Tipton faces other charges including violating truck driving rules and making a false report.
