Tri-State Tollway To Close Saturday for Emergency Bridge Repairs

Lane reductions begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday near Balmoral Avenue Bridge

Heads up, weekend travelers.

All northbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway between I-88 and I-90 will close from midnight Saturday into Sunday morning for emergency repairs to the Balmoral Avenue Bridge, the Illinois Tollway announced.

Lane reductions begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday near the bridge, and tollway officials said most lanes will reopen by 8 a.m. Sunday.  One lane in both directions will remain closed until noon Sunday for construction.

Drivers are urged to find alternate routes or follow posted detours using I-290. Tollway officials said southbound I-294 will remain open with lane reductions.

“Earlier this week, a dump truck traveling on the Tri-State Tollway hit the Balmoral Bridge at full speed, damaging the first bridge beam to the point where it needs to be removed and replaced,” Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said. “While the bridge remains structurally stable and poses no risk to drivers, we always want to err on the side of caution when it comes to safety.”

Workers will remove the damage beam this weekend and, later this summer, will replace it with a new one. Another closure will be required to fit in the new beam.

Detours will reroute northbound traffic onto westbound I-290 then onto eastbound I-90 before returning to northbound I-294.
