Metra Train Derails in Downtown Chicago

A train derailment and mechanical failure caused extensive delays on two Metra lines during the Friday afternoon commute. 

A train on the Metra Electric District line derailed in the afternoon, halting inbound and outbound movement near 11th St, according to Metra.

Inbound train #128, scheduled to arrive at Millennium Station at 4:02 p.m. derailed shortly before arrival, according to Metra's website. 

Inbound and outbound trains were cleared to proceed through the area around 4:40 p.m., but extensive delays are expected on the Electric District line.

Outbound train #2225 on the Milwaukee District-West line, scheduled to depart Union Station at 4:05 p.m., was operating at a 36 minute delay due to mechanical failure, according to Metra. 

All eastbound South Shore trains were also temporarily stopped at Millennium Station, with delays continuing for several hours into the evening.
