Three Men Found Dead From Cold in NW Side Building Identified

The men died from hypothermia and cold exposure

The three men who were found dead from cold exposure inside a building on the Northwest Side last month have been identified.

An autopsy showed that Martin Kaziemierz, 73, Sergei Subchuk, 36, and Nikolai Chtefan, 63, died from hypothermia and cold exposure, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Their bodies were found in a vacant building at 3310 N. Harding in the Avondale neighborhood on Jan. 12.

The men may have been homeless, authorities said.

The medical examiner's office concluded that alcohol intoxication was also a contributing factor to their deaths, which were ruled accidents.

At the time, their deaths raised the number of cold-related fatalies this season in Cook County to 14. The number of cold-related deaths is now at 18.
