In its third year of existence, Pokémon Go Fest has returned to Grant Park, and thousands of visitors will come together to play the iconic game during a four-day extravaganza.
The festival, which began Thursday and will run through Sunday, has been described as a “four-day Pokémon party” by game-players, and this year’s event promises to be bigger than ever.
“It’s exciting because you can get more rare Pokémon’s here than usual spawns, and there’s a chance to catch higher CP creatures, so it’s really fun,” one game-player said.
The first Pokémon Go Fest in 2017 quickly turned into a disaster, as technical glitches and snafus led to thousands of angry players. Refunds were issued and credits were given to players to use in the game, but many were left fuming after the Grant Park event turned south.
Things were much better in 2018, as the event moved to Lincoln Park and expanded over two days. This year the event is back in Grant Park, and with player battles, habitats, and team lounges set up, organizers are hoping that players will have more fun than ever before.
“It’s fun seeing all these people coming to play a game,” Morgan Shepard, who came to Chicago from Florida for the event, said. “It sounds silly, but it’s really not. It gets people out, they can meet people, and spend time with their families. I like that.”
