The Mayor's Mystery Money

Won't let city council in on Midway deal details

It's a complicated and ground-breaking $2.5 billion plan, but the mayor asked for "quickie" approval last week of his proposal to privatize Midway Airport and it looks like that's what he'll get. A city council panel takes up the mayor's Midway lease deal today and the full council could approve it on Wednesday.

The plan is expected to result in $100 million of discretionary funding landing in the mayor's lap. Last week, aldermen complained that that mayoral aides wouldn't say how the money would be spent.

But the council won't be kept in the dark for long, the Tribune reports today. "Only after the council approves the deal would city officials introduce an ordinance detailing how the windfall would be spent."
