5 Teens Injured in Rollover Crash on Lake Shore Drive

Alcohol was suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to police, who said the driver will be cited with at least two moving violations

Five teenagers were injured in a rollover crash on Lake Shore Drive on Chicago's North Side early Sunday, according to police.

The incident occurred at around 1:40 a.m. in the city’s Edgewater neighborhood, officials said.

A Toyota sedan was traveling southbound in the 5200 block of North Lake Shore Drive at a high rate of speed when the driver, an 18-year-old woman, lost control and struck a tree, according to Chicago police.

Authorities said the collision caused the car to roll over, ejecting the 14-year-old girl who was sitting in the front passenger seat into the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive.

She was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The driver and three other passengers – a 19-year-old woman and two boys, ages 16 and 17 – were also injured and taken to area hospitals, with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.

Alcohol was suspected to be a factor in the crash, according to police, who said the driver will be cited with at least two moving violations, including negligent driving and speeding.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
