Felon, Boy Charged in Shooting Death of 9-Year-Old

Chastity Turner shot while washing her dog on Wednesday

Charges were filed Friday against two teens in connection with a shooting that killed a 9-year-old girl while she was washing her dog two days earlier.

Davionne Whitfield, 17, of the 7400 block of South Normal Avenue, was charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the slaying of Chastity Turner, said the Cook County state's attorney's office. Whitfield was also charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Gerald Lauderdale, 19, also of the 7400 block of South Normal Avenue, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Information on Lauderdale's previous conviction was not immediately available.

Chastity Turner was with her father just two blocks from the accused, in the 7400 block of South Stewart Avenue, when a van pulled up and someone began shooting around 7 p.m. Wednesday. She was hit by a bullet in the neck. Her 31-year-old father, Andre Turner, and two of his friends were also shot.

Police sources said Thursday that Andre Turner was not cooperating with police as they questioned the two shooting suspects.

Police Supt. Jody Weis on Thursday said he believes the shooting may be gang-related and that Andre Turner may have been the intended target.
