Teen Struck By Semi Near Curie HS

The teen was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition

A high school student was in critical condition Tuesday after being struck by a tractor-trailer near Curie High School, police said.

The 18-year-old male student was crossing the street on his way to lunch when he was struck near the school at about 11:11 a.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs.

When officers arrived, the teen was pinned beneath the truck at 49th and Archer. He was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. His identity has not been publicly released.

"It is just one of the worst intersections on the southwest side," said one woman, echoing many who said the street is difficult to navigate and that vehicles often run the red lights.

Others, however, said the problem is with students not paying attention when the cross the roadway. Police said the student may have been wearing headphones at the time of the crash.

No citations were immediately issued to the driver, police said.
