Teen Shot Dead on South Side

A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in the South Side Chatham neighborhood in what may have been a gang-related, retaliation shooting, police said.

The teen, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office as Jeremy Brooks -- was shot at around 2:15 p.m. in an alley near East 78th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue.

Brooks, of the 7800 block of S. Ellis Ave., was shot multiple times by at least two people, said police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala.

A large number of gang-enforcement officers were sent to investigate.  Several officers carried M4 rifles.  They said the shooting is likely gang-related and may have been a retaliation murder.

The teen is the younger brother of a high-ranking member of the gangster disciples, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing a police source.

No one was in custody as of early Thursday evening.
