Teen Killed, Boy Injured in Gary Hit-and-Run

Malik Herron and another boy were walking on the 4900 block of Vermont Street when they were struck, police say

A 13-year-old boy was killed and another boy injured when they were struck by a car in a hit-and-run in Gary, Ind., police said.

The two boys were walking in the 4900 block of Vermont Street on Saturday evening when a large dark-colored vehicle left the roadway and struck them, according to Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King.

One of the boys went home and told his parents what happened and the boys were transported to an area hospital for treatment. Thirteen-year-old Malik Herron was later pronounced dead.

"It jumped the curb, and [authorities] said that my son tried to move but it was so quick," Herron's mother, Monik Herron, told NBC Chicago. "They said it hit him so hard he flew in the air and came back down."

The other injured boy, whose age was not immediately known, was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle is believed to have damage to the front end, turn signal and mirror on the passenger side, according to authorities. Gary police on Monday said they'd located a "vehicle of interest."

Anyone with information surrounding the accident is being asked to call Sgt. Dawn Westerfield at 219-881-7485.
