Teen Gets 30 Months for Fatal Street-Racing Crash

A north suburban teen was sentenced to periodic imprisonment Monday for his role in a street-racing crash that left a 16-year-old girl dead, the Lake County News-Sun reported.

Jeremy Betancourt was sentenced to 30 months of periodic imprisonment and four years of intensive probation for his role in the crash that killed Antioch High School student Cynthia Perez.

During his periodic imprisonment, the 18-year-old Betancourt will only be released from Lake County Jail for school and treatment.

He pleaded guilty in March to aggravated driving under the influence of marijuana resulting in death. Under a negotiated deal approved by Judge Victoria Rossetti, charges of aggravated street racing and reckless homicide were dropped.

The Antioch teen could have received up to 10 years in prison.
