Chicago Red Stars Standouts Julie Ertz, Morgan Brian Named to Team USA Women's World Cup Roster

Ertz and Brian will each be playing in their second World Cup, as will goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher

As Team USA goes for its second straight title at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Chicago Red Stars will be sending some of their best players to France for the tournament.

On Thursday, the team’s 23-player roster was announced ahead of the tournament, which kicks off next month. Star forward Carli Lloyd was named to her fourth World Cup squad, and six others, were named to their third squad, according to a press release from USA Soccer.

Red Stars midfielder Julie Ertz will be making her second World Cup appearance, as she was one of six midfielders named to the team’s roster. She will be joined by Red Stars teammate Morgan Brian, who will also be appearing in her second tournament.

Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher is one of three netminders that will be on the squad, and Red Stars defender Tierna Davidson was named to her first World Cup roster.

Defender Becky Sauerbrunn, who plays for Utah Royals FC and hails from St. Louis, also made the squad, as did midfielder Rose Lavelle, who went to the University of Wisconsin and currently plays for the Washington Spirit.

Midfielders: Morgan Brian, Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Allie Long, Samantha Mewis

Forwards: Tobin Heath, Carli Lloyd, Jessica McDonald, Alex Morgan, Christen Press, Mallory Pugh, Megan Rapinoe

Group F play for the Team USA squad will kick off on June 11 when the team battles Thailand. The American squad will also play Chile and Sweden in the first round of the tournament.
