Did Tara Lipinski Jinx US Women in Figure Skating? Twitter Seems to Think So

Questions began surfacing on social media after Lipinski's comments about U.S. skaters were immediately followed by uncharacteristic falls

Could Tara Lipinski have some juju up her sparkling sleeves? Twitter seems to think so after the women's figure skating short program.

Questions began surfacing on social media after Lipinski's comments about U.S. skaters were immediately followed by uncharacteristic falls.

And it didn't just happen once.

“In practice, she’s just been hitting these jumps," Lipinski said at the start of Chicago-area star Bradie Tennell's routine. "Her real strength is her mental fortitude...She really needs this."

Seconds later, Tennell fell on what was arguably one of her biggest jumps - an error Lipisnki's co-commentator called "shocking."

"Her consistency has been her strength," Johnny Weir said.

It marked the only fall in Tennell's performance.

Then came Karen Chen.

"Karen Chen is the whole package - fourth in the world, artistry, jumps," Lipinski said at the start of the performance. "She feels the music in a different way than any other competitor."

"But her jumps can be hot and cold," she added. "She needs this triple triple."

That triple triple was again the only fall in Chen's routine.

And finally, it was Mirai Nagasu's turn.

"Everyone is waiting for this jump," Lipinski said.

A jump that would become yet another U.S. fall in the short program.

The comments weren't lost on Twitter, with some calling Lipinski a "jinx."
