Tainted Syringes: 5 Dead, 100s Sickened, Two Imprisoned

Chicago-based company did not sterilze shipped needles

Two employees of a Chicago-based company have been sentenced to 54 months in federal prison for their role in a cost-cutting scheme which made hundreds sick and caused five deaths.

In an effort to cut corners and increase profit, the employees of AM2PAT Inc. knowingly shipped syringes out of the firm's North Carolina plant without making sure they were sterile, federal prosecutors say.

Many syringes were tainted with bacteria, causing at least 200 bacterial infections and five deaths before the needles were recalled in 2007.

Authorities are still looking for the firm's chief executive, Dushyant Patel.
