Police in the Chicago suburb of Wheeling say a 33-year-old officer died this weekend after she collapsed during a training exercise.
Shamekia Goodwin-Badger died Saturday afternoon at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
She was taken to the hospital Thursday night when she collapsed during training. The Florida native was a decorated Army veteran who served in Iraq and Kuwait. She joined the department in 2008 after spending four years working for the Hawthorn Woods Police Department.
Wheeling officials say in a statement Monday that she often worked the midnight shift and specialized in working with youth and as an evidence technician.
A funeral is set for Wednesday.
Wheeling is about 25 miles northwest of Chicago.
