Suburban Chicago Mall to Close as Holiday Season Begins

Some stores with outside access will remain open despite the mall closure

As the holiday gift-giving season continues, one Chicago-area mall plans to close its doors.

The Krausz Companies Inc. announced Tuesday that Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles will officially close all interior shops this Friday, Dec. 1, in favor of a new residential plan for the space.

The city approved a proposal in May to replace the shopping center with 155 townhouses and 256 apartments, according to the Daily Herald.

Project manager Chuck May cited difficulty keeping tenants as the reason for the center's demise.

May told the Daily Herald "it was apparent to us that we had to take a different direction" when the Kohl's store closed.

Carson Pirie Scott, Von Maur and the Classic Cinemas movie theater will remain open despite the mall closure. Other nearby storefronts, including Cooper's Hawk, Starkbucks and Verizon, are also unaffected.
