Suburban Bus Driver Arrested for DUI

A suburban bus driver was arrested for DUI after allegedly trying to pick up special needs students while her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.

Karen Kawa of Chicago Ridge was arrested after a special needs assistant at Walsh Elementary School in Summit noticed that she was acting irregularly.

The employee notified the principal of the school, who removed the keys from the ignition of the bus that Kawa was driving and had kids disembark. According to police, Kawa blew a 0.231 on her blood-alcohol test, nearly three times the legal limit.

Kawa has been charged with one count of aggravated DUI, according to Cook County court records.
