Stroger's Foes Blast Tax Hike at Debate

During the first televised primary debate of the year last night, all three of Cook County Board President Todd Stroger's opponents blasted his sales tax hike and vowed to eliminate it should they be elected.

Ald. Toni Preckwinkle (4th) blasted the county's reputation for cronyism -- also a direct dig at Stroger, who's said he abides by the Shakman decree to keep politics out of hiring.

Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown argued she would boost tax revenue by creating jobs.

Terrance O'Brien, president of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, pledged he would immediately rollback the remaining half of the sales tax increase.

All four candidates discussed cost-cutting measures, including increasing the number of non-violent inmates from jails.

Stroger, for his part, touted his administration's achievements. Stroger's argued in recent weeks that his administration's achievements aren't covered by the press often enough.
