Getting Around During the Chicago Marathon: Which Streets Will Stay Open

Along with the thousands of runners and millions of spectators converging on the city for the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon comes - you guessed it - traffic.

While dozens of streets will periodically close throughout race day on Oct. 8, some routes will stay open all day. Here are the roads you can take in The Loop, your neighborhood, and beyond - 

Main thoroughfares

  • Lake Shore Drive: North- and southbound lanes will remain open.
  • Inner Lake Shore Drive: North- and southbound lanes will remain open from Diversey Parkway to Belmont Avenue. Access to Lake Shore Dr. will remain open at Belmont Avenue.
  • Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94): East- and westbound lanes will remain open. Southbound exit ramp to 31st Street closed.
  • Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94): East- and westbound lanes will remain open. Entrance and exit ramps closed at Adams Street.
  • Eisenhower Expressway (I-290): East- and westbound lanes will remain open. Westbound exit ramp to Damen Avenue closed.
  • Stevenson Expressway (I-55): North- and southbound lanes will remain open.

The Loop

  • All streets in The Loop (bordered by Wells Street, Van Buren Street, Wabash Avenue and Lake Street) will be open to traffic by 9 a.m.

North of the Loop

  • Michigan Avenue: North- and southbound lanes north of 8th St. will remain open, including access to the Magnificent Mile.
  • Clybourn Avenue will remain open.
  • Lincoln Avenue: North of Sedgwick Street will remain open.
  • Clark Street: North of Diversey Parkway will remain open.

West of the Loop

  • Milwaukee Avenue will remain open.
  • Halsted Street: North of Adams Street will remain open.
  • Ashland Avenue: North of Adams Street will remain open.
  • Damen Avenue: North of Adams Street will remain open.

South of the Loop

  • Damen Avenue: South of Van Buren Street will remain open.
  • Ashland Avenue: South of 18th Street will remain open.
  • Archer Avenue: West of Halsted Street will remain open.
  • Halsted Street: South of Archer Avenue will remain open.
  • Michigan Avenue: South of 35th Street will remain open.
  • Martin Luther King Drive will remain open.

Race organizers said that while these routes are scheduled to be available, additional streets may be closed by Chicago police or marathon officials if deemed necessary.

Streets will close along the marathon route between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., reopening as soon as the final runners pass through. Click here for a full list of street closures.
