Street Race on Ike Kills Man, Injures Others

A driver involved in a fatal Eisenhower Expressway drag race crash early Sunday on the West Side that killed one man and injured two other people has been charged with DUI.

A 2004 Chevrolet Impala crashed on the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) near the South Oakley Boulevard Exit ramp about 2:30 a.m., Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. Jeff Grendzinski said.

The driver was apparently drag racing when he lost control and the car rolled, Grendzinski said. None of the three people in the car were wearing safety belts and the driver was ejected and the front seat passenger partially ejected.

The driver, Edward Dixon, 28, of Chicago has been charged with DUI, state police said Sunday evening.

Front seat passenger Maurice A. Horton, 28, of Chicago, was killed in the crash, Grendzinski said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the fatality, but could not immediately provide further details.

The driver was hospitalized in critical condition and the backseat passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Grendzinski said.

State Police do not have a description of the other vehicle involved in the race and anyone who witnessed the race or crash is asked to call State Police at (847) 294-4400. The vehicle has not been located as of Sunday night.

State Police are investigating.
