Storms Wrap Steamy Week

A pair of storms that hit the city Friday morning brought lightning, high winds, thunder -- and cooler weather.

Winds of up to 50 miles per hour and brief heavy downpours accompanied a storm that came through at about 10 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A majority of the storm damage appears to be in areas north of the city, with several trees brought to the ground from high winds. Thousands of ComEd customers were left without power.

There is another chance for rain Friday afternoon.

But after five days of stifling heat, the storms bring a bit of comfort, with temperatures predicted to reach only to the mid 80s.

"[The storms] will hinder any warming that we were previously expecting," said National Weather Service meteorologist Stephen Rodriguez.. "It’s not nearly as bad as the last couple of days."

Still, the heat index may push the mercury to about 100 degrees.  An excessive heat watch -- not a warning like the previous couple of days -- is in effect through Sunday.

The weekend begins with intervals of clouds and sun, as well as some showers and thunderstorms. Predicted highs are in the upper 80s to lower 90s with humidity making it feel like 100 degrees.

Sunday likely also will see a mix of sun and clouds, as well as hazy, hot temperatures in the lower 90s. Be ready with an umbrella, as periods of showers stay on the radar.

Less humidity makes Monday more tolerable, and Tuesday's highs are much lower than a week ago, with highs in the mid-80s.
