A man was killed during a violent suburban home invasion Thursday night while his 19-year-old stepson escaped through a basement window to alert their neighbors, police said.

Officers responded to the call about 8:51 p.m. in the 1800 block of Clinton Avenue in Berwyn. The man who escaped the home was bleeding from the mouth and told neighbors he had been robbed, police said. Three armed people came into the home and separated the 19-year-old from his 57-year-old stepfather in the home’s basement, police said. The teen said his stepfather was possibly unconscious, police said.

When officers made entry into the first-floor of the bungalow they found Juan Torres unconscious and bleeding in the home, police said. No one else was found in the building, police said. Torres was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood where he later died from his injuries.

Autopsy results for Torres list his cause of death a type of cardiovascular disease and multiple injuries due to assault. His death was ruled a homicide.

Police canvassed the area for leads and continue to investigate.
