Special Election to Be Held to Replace US Rep. Schock

A special election will be held to replace Republican U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock.

The Republican from Peoria announced Tuesday he will resign his seat at the end of the month. The news came after weeks of questions about irregularities in his campaign and congressional spending accounts.

GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner will have five days from the March 31 effective date of Schock's resignation to schedule a special election.

That election — including any primary — must be held within 120 days of the seat becoming vacant.

Schock is a four-term congressman who was Congress' youngest member when he was elected at age 27.

He said Tuesday the "constant questions" about his spending have made it too difficult to continue serving the 18th Congressional District.
