1 Shot By Gunman Wearing Surgical Mask in Downtown CTA Tunnel: Cops

A person was shot downtown Thursday as a heavy police presence saturated the area and CTA trains came to a halt during rush hour, authorities said.

The person was shot near Van Buren Street and State Street about 5 p.m. The person was taken to an area hospital where their condition had stabilized. The shooting occurred in the walk-way tunnel that connects train stops, police said.

Police said the gunman was wearing a surgical mask.

"Victim was consious (sic) and talking but at this point not cooperating with police," police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted.

Blue Line service was suspended between Grand and UIC-Halsted. Red Line trains were not stopping at Jackson, the CTA said.

“We're gathering information about the current Blue Line service and will provide updates shortly,” the CTA tweeted. “Trains are still standing; consider alternatives to Blue Line service from downtown, including other rail lines to buses that can serve your trip.”

Detectives were reviwing video of the shooting captured by CTA security cameras, police said.
