Snow, Ice Cause Major Delays on CTA Train Lines

A Green Line train was stuck for more than an hour near 37th and State Streets with 32 people on board

Freezing rain, snow and ice caused major delays and a service suspension on the Green, Purple, Pink and Yellow Lines during the Tuesday morning commute.

A Green Line train was stuck near 37th and State Streets between stops for more than an hour. Thirty-two people were on board the train, and they had to be transferred to another train while crews fixed the problem.

One CTA employee slipped and suffered a minor injury, but no other injuries were reported.

Other Green Line trains were standing at 35th Street and California due to delays, and Harlem-bound trains were operating with delays after an earlier mechanical problem on a train at the Conservatory. station.

The Purple and Pink Lines also experienced significant delays Tuesday morning. On the Linden-bound Purple Line, a train stalled at Foster. On the Pink Line, a train headed toward the Loop was forced to stop near Clinton due to a mechanical problem.

Service was suspended on the Yellow Line as well due to a stalled train near Oakton.

The snow and sleet caused icy conditions on the tracks and was blamed for the delays, Deputy District Chief Dan Cunningham, of the Chicago Fire Department, said.
