Two Dead In Small Plane Crash

Victims ID'd as Hugh Scott Clark of Lake Forest and Paul Sanfilippo of Grayslake

Two people are confirmed dead after a small plane crash near the Lake in the Hills airport on Thursday afternoon.

The McHenry County coroner's office late Thursday identified the victims as 65-year-old Hugh Scott Clark of Lake Forest and 82-year-old Paul Sanfilippo of Grayslake.

The single engine, Beech 35 plane went down on airport property. A witness said it appeared the aircraft was approaching the primary runway when it banked to the left and started to decelerate and lose altitude before crashing into a marshy area full of gravel.

First responders had to trek 200 to 300 yards through mud and marsh to reach the wreckage. Shortly after arriving, they put out a small fire and covered part of the fuselage with a blue tarp.

From the sky NBC Chicago's helicopter could see the aircraft with severe damage to its front end.

The plane's tail number reads N176Q. Federal Aviation Administration records show it is registered to Sanfillippo.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are still investigating. Authorities said crosswind may have been a factor.
