The Shedd Aquarium welcomed two new penguin chicks to its menagerie earlier this year, and now we’re learning a bit more about the attraction’s new residents.
The Magellanic penguin chicks, currently named Chick 420 and Chick 421, are both female, Shedd veterinarians announced on Wednesday. The birds went through an extensive check-up this week, and both are hitting all growth milestones.
The chicks are still socializing with adult penguins, and are currently shedding their fluffy feathers and growing in their waterproof adult feathers, according to officials.
Names for the pair have not yet been decided, but that will be left up to the Shedd Aquarium’s membership, officials said. Five pairs of names have been chosen as candidates, and members can begin voting on Aug. 11 on the names:
Calista and Carmen – Named for Isla Calista in the Falkland Islands and Carmen, Argentina
Loma and Lively – Named for Punta Loma, Argentina and Lively Isle, Falkland Islands
May and Maile – Named for Chilean islands

Rosie and Reina – Named for Rosario, Argentina and Reina, Chile
Sara and Solis – Named for Puerto Sara in the Magellan Strait and Solis Islands, Buenos Aires
Aquarium members will have until Aug. 17 to vote for their favorite names, and will get the news of the tally’s winner before the general public later this year.
