“Sexual Impurity” Brings Megachurch Pastor Down

Reverend's immediate resignation announced following admission

Willow Creek Community Church --  the evangelical megachurch based in South Barrington -- is one of the most influential evangelical churches in the nation with more than 20,000 members who worship at six locations throughout Illinois, as well as an international church community.

The church is now dealing with a mega problem after the pastor of its downtown campus admitted to "sexual impurity."

During Sunday services at the Auditorium Theater on Jan. 25, one of the church Elders, Greg Haecker, read a brief statement to the Willow Chicago congregation announcing the resignation -- effective immediately -- of pastor Rev. Steve Wu.

The statement said: "He admitted to sexual impurity and has taken full responsibility for his sin."

Details about what happened and what's next for Wu were unclear, but the statement said Wu "has expressed a desire to participate in a restoration process."

"We would ask you to pray diligently for Steve in these difficult days," the statement said.
