Severe Weather Possible in Chicago Area Friday

A late round of storms Friday evening could bring severe weather to the area

The Chicago area could deal with the threat of severe weather on Friday as several rounds of showers and thunderstorms could pound the area.

According to the latest forecast models from the NBC 5 Storm Team, widely scattered storms are possible in the overnight hours, but the first real chance of rain will come after the morning rush hour. Showers and storms are expected to fire ahead of a cold front beginning to impact the region, and some areas could see significant rains early in the day.

After those showers and storms pass, the sun is expected to make a brief appearance through the early afternoon hours, potentially destabilizing the atmosphere and setting the stage for a second round of showers and storms.

Those thunderstorms have the potential to be severe, packing strong winds, torrential downpours, and a threat of tornadoes, according to forecast models. Those models are predicting some rotation with the storms, which could spawn funnel clouds through the western suburbs and the city of Chicago.

The storms are expected to remain around the area through the midnight hour, dumping two or more inches of rain in some locations.

The remainder of the weekend could see more rain, but it will be more scattered than the rains expected on Friday.
