Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for Parts of Chicago Area

The Chicago area could see severe weather Tuesday, potentially bringing heavy rain, hail and damaging winds.

The National Weather Service initially issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for multiple counties, including Livingston, Ford, DeKalb, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Will, LaSalle, Lee, Ogle and Iroquois counties in Illinois. That watch was canceled just before noon for most, but remained in effect until 3 p.m. for Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois as well as Newton and Jasper counties in northwest Indiana.

A line of strong to severe storms was expected to move into the area at around 10:30 a.m. CST, NBC Storm Team 5 forecasts show, likely sparing the morning commute.

The storms could bring potentially damaging wind gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph, with a higher risk in the southernmost part of the region. It could also bring heavy rain and lightning as well as hail.

That line of storms was expected to continue to move east through the early afternoon.

After the storms pass, conditions are likely to remain partly cloudy, warm and humid with temperature highs in the mid to upper 80s.
