2 Still Sought After Oak Brook Mall Robbery

Police on Monday were still searching for two of three men who attempted to rob a jewelry store a day earlier at Oakbrook Center mall in Oak Brook.

The trio entered the C.D. Peacock Jewelry store around 3:40 p.m. One man was armed with a four-pound sledgehammer he used to smash a display case, police said.

An armed security guard intervened and told the man to put down the sledge hammer, but he refused and advanced toward the guard, police said. The guard then fired his gun and shot the man in the abdomen, authorities said.

Police said Monday the 24-year-old from Chicago was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital where his condition has been listed as critically stable.

The other two men fled the mall in a black SUV, which police said was stolen from the mall’s parking lot. They are described as black males in their late 20s and early 30s. One man is heavy set, police said, stands about 5-foot-9, has a tattoo on the right side of his neck and was wearing a black T-shirt.

The other man is taller, possibly 5 feet, 11 inches, with a heavy beard and wearing a white T-shirt.

The shooting put the mall on lock down Sunday, but no one in the mall was reported injured.
