Sears Holdings laid off more than 100 corporate employees Wednesday, the company announced.

About 100 workers at their Hoffman Estates headquarters found out their jobs were cut effective immediately on Wednesday with about 15 additional people receiving the same news at other offices.

The layoffs were made in various departments across the organization, according to the struggling retailer.

“These decisions are never taken lightly, but they are a necessary part of our efforts to transform the company and return it to profitability,” Sears spokesperson Howard Riefs said in a statement. “We are committed to treating these associates with respect and compassion during this process.”

Eligible associates will receive outplacement services and severance to assist in their transition, Rieds said.
